Hey Doc Let My Liver Work

Spartans, raise thy glass and drinketh till thy bowels will holdeth not thy gift from Dionysius! In the name of the science gods thy liver be healeth! In the great state of California, a practitioner of "magic" (neurobiologist Katerina Akassoglou) has found the method for activating self healing of the liver.

I'm kidding about the alcoholism, but a temporarily self-regenerating liver would be ideal for dealing with diseases of the liver like hepatitis or cirrhosis. Basically, Akassoglou used lab mice to figure out how to make your body generate new liver cells.

Even after a breakthrough there are always things that still need to be worked out.

"If you know what the switch is," she says, "and if you know how these cells become quiescent again ... then you can start interfering with this process."
