The day the world fell apart: Why did Google and Yahoo shut down this morning?

I thought that Digg might be the best place to ask the question. Why is it that both Google and Yahoo were down this morning for several hours? I'm not talking about just the search engines, but all sites which are owned by one of the two companies (i.e. youtube, blogger, gmail etc.)

Most importantly why isn't anybody concerned that the worlds largest Internet company shut down for a couple of hours without explanation? Anybody who can help me get to the bottom of this gets my undying appreciation.

All the best,
Christian

Just in case you haven't come across it yet, here's the biggest story you won't find reported anywhere in the news.

Yea, this lack of communication really stinks. Gmail cannot collapse like this without a backup. Is this a large scale social test - to see what communication techniques people resort to when email is severed? Has Google considered upgrading their bottomless pit of servers to 8 core apple Xservers?
