Cell Phone Show-down: The Zune Phone vs. iPhone

We all knew it would be a matter of time before substantial rumours would emerge about a microsoft phone which would compete with the iPhone. Guess what its going to go under the Zune label, as possibly the Zune phone.

According to informants Microsoft execs are holding meetings today in order to figure out some more details about the 'iphone killer' (I use that term loosely). Hence it shouldn't come as a surprise that barely anything is known about the phone, as it is clearly still in early stages of development.

What is known is the following;

  • The phone will take into use the Zune Market Place.
  • It will be a smart phone.
  • It will not run Windows Mobile, instead it will use a similar interface to that of the music player (considered by many one of the best music interfaces)
  • Xbox 360 syncing. How it will connect is still an issue however the goal is to be able to sync video from the 360 to the phone via a wireless connection.
The phone is scheduled to be released sometime this year. The fact that Microsoft is aiming to use the 360 capabilities is a very smart move, considering the fact that so many people own 360's to start with.

I'm afraid that with the Apple iPhone and the Microsoft Zune Phone the cell phone industry is about to change considerably. Let me know what you all think.

Thanks CrunchGear!

Cheers,
Christian

The iPod beat Microsoft to the portable music device market by what, five years, so don't be surprised that it doesn't look like they're going to let Apple off so easily on a cellphone -- especially not while they've got a fighting chance. A phone? So Zune? Microsoft's pledged to shoehorn a mobile into its player before long ...
